Note- Take extreme care when constructing any valve project as high voltage can be lethal,

when in doubt employ a qualified technician to build the unit for you.

 Installation Tips And Advice!.

Always remove and clean you're tubes with a good contact cleaner and reinsert to test

equipment, this is a common fault with valves and many people have replaced them

unnecessarily!, after cleaning the contacts you can then inspect the internal glass to make sure

they glow in operation (while also being very careful not to touch the metal chassis or

components on board as lethal high voltages are associated with all valve products).

Another important tip for repairing old radios and television sets is to pay attention to

the capacitors!, they can dry out and cause problems with reception, the best fix is to

replace them with modern high voltage Polyester (Green Caps-), use the 630 volt types

for you're non polarized capacitors (these are the ones with no positive or negative

markings on them!).

Replace your electrolytic capacitors with those of the same value (in micro-fard) and

voltage.

In fact most electros can be up to ten percent out of correct value (in mF) when

tested so dont be too concerned if you cant get the exact same one, just try and get them as

close as possible.

The voltage rateing is a much more important thing!, you really need the same value

or higher for this specification, for example to replace a 100 Micro-fard 350 Volt type

it would be acceptable to use a 400V item and if you were unable to get 100mF

then 90 micro would be good enough.

Many people love to retain the original look of the internal components

within a vintage radio!, my advice if your that keen is to hollow out the inside of the

larger capacitors and insert the smaller new type part inside!, but don't try this with

any type of oil filled caps as these can contain possible carcinogenic chemicals.

On a final note we recommend the purchase of a good high wattage soldering iron

like our Weller SP-80D ($79.95inc Gst), this unit is rated at 80 Watts continuous

power and is necessary when working on old equipment as the parts contained within

the metal chassis can be difficult to remove with smaller powered irons due to heat

dissipation.
