Product Review!. (The Ultimate Two Way Wide Range Speaker Kit!)

At one stage or another most audio enthusiasts have wanted to make a pair

of speakers? and with the current interest in home theater taking off there has

never been a better time to build you're own!, not only that, this is one area of

electronics where you can save a great deal of money by doing it yourself!.

We have sold lots of component speakers over time and many of them have

delivered the goods sound wise but in our experience one particular brand

stands out and that's Vifa of Denmark!.

In our opinion Vifa builds the best quality tweeters, there are several

models available but specification wise the D25AG-35 Aluminum Dome

driver is the one we recommend you use.

This unit has an extremely wide frequency response (1.5 kHz to 35khz) in fact

it can produce sounds at a higher range than humans can hear!, the power

rating is 100 Watts RMS. (continuous ) and it has a output decibel level of 89 DB

when measured at 1 meter! (Note- for non experts a good dB rating is essential as it gives you more volume for a lower level setting on you're amplifier!).

When it comes to producing a tight bottom end sound response you need a good bass driver

and although Vifa manufacture them we have found another Danish company that makes

a better (in our opinion) woofer!.

We tested several American and European 6.5 inch Mid-Bass units but found the Magnetically

Shielded Peerless 176-WR- 26 to offer the best value and performance for the price!.

Our test equipment revealed that this speaker had a very even frequency response

throughout its stated range, (that being 20 Hertz to 5 kHz) and although sound

quality is a subjective and a very personal thing,our panel of judges all thought this speaker

had the best vocal clarity especially in the mid range region!.

(For non experts the bass frequency, expressed in Hertz is an important statistic,

basically, having the lowest figure possible is better for producing really deep sounds!).

Of course if you're building a great two way loudspeaker kit then you must have a good

crossover!, what this essentially does is to combine or match the speakers together, this is done

at the upper end frequency response of the Mid/Woofer to the lower end region of the tweeter

to give you a seamless sound stage with out any loss or drop off in the total range of music to the

listener!.

Because our recommended Vifa D-25 starts at incredible 1.5Khz!, we have found the

ideal crossover to use.

Our CX-7005 has a crossover point of 3.5 Kilohertz and is ideal for our speaker combination,

it has o low signal loss when inserted into the system (.4dB at 100 Hz) combined with a high

maximum power rating of 150 Watts R.M.S.and its overall decibel rating is 12 DB per octave.

The next most important thing is the box design to house the drivers in, this is a critical matter

and is very important because you can have the best components in the world but if the

dimensions of the enclosure are not correct then the end result will be poor sound quality!.

Using C.A.D (Computer Aided Design) we created our own enclosures to unleash the

superb sound quality of the drivers reviewed on this page!.

Many people have shown a preference to building the speaker boxes themselves rather

than buying them and this is a good idea as it allows you to select you're own timber

and obtain the best finish possible while keeping the cost of the over all project down!.

We have put together the above component speaker and crossover package combined

with the associated hardware (e.g.- the pre wired internal cable loom, gold plated input

connectors and sound damping material) and although we are not providing pre-

made boxes you will receive a copy of the construction plans free of charge!.

For those of you not into woodwork we suggest you select your own preferred timber

at you're local hardware store and take the plans to a good carpenter as they are

very strait forward and easy to construct!.
